  • Powdery mildew fungi: an introduction
  • Phylogeny and systematics of powdery mildews: an overview
  • Morphological aspects of powdery mildew anamorphs and teleomorphs
  • Host ranges of powdery mildew fungi

14.00 - 17.00 Practical training** - topics to be covered:

  • light microscopy of the morphology of powdery mildew conidia, conidiophores, hyphal appressoria, haustoria, chasmothecia, and asci and ascospores
  • conidial germination tests on different substrates
  • ascospore viability tests using fluorescence microscopy
  • rehydration of powdery mildew herbarium specimens for morphological studies

  • DNA extraction from low quantities of fresh and herbarium powdery mildew materials using different methods
  • PCR amplification of a number of loci from powdery mildews
  • quantification of the powdery mildew infection levels using classical and qPCR methods

  • analysis of conidial germination tests set up on Monday
  • analysis of the PCR and qPCR works done on Tuesday
